Announcement for a Master Thesis in the Field of Packaging Safety and Toxicology:
For the assessment of packaging safety, in vitro bioassays such as the Ames test are used to evaluate the toxicological effects of recycled plastic materials. Our current goal in this area involves the improvement of established sample preparation methods by means of extraction and fractionation of recycled plastic migrates (LDPE/HDPE/PP/PS). Subsequently, these migrate fractions are analyzed with a miniaturized Ames test to expose the presence of critical non-intentionally added substances (NIAS).
Tasks:
• Recycling and migration simulations according to EU regulation 10/2011
• Extraction and fractionation of recycled plastic migrates
• Analysis of migrates and fractions with a miniaturized Ames test
• Preparation of bacterial culture and media components for Ames tests
• Experiment planning and evaluation of the results
Requirements:
• Currently in a master program in natural sciences (Biotechnology, Food Technology, Safety in the Food Chain, or related field)
• Enjoy working in the laboratory and having good communication skills
• Ability to plan and carry out experiments independently
• Master thesis can be in German or English
Employment:
• Marginal employment (approx. €550 per month)
• Duration: 8 months, about 30 hours per week (flexible working hours)
• Anticipated start: 01.06.2025
Place of employment:
FH Campus Wien, Favoritenstraße 222, 1100 Wien, House of Science & Engineering (HoSE)
