This quantitative trait locus (QTL) encodes a gene that has a large effect on the overall resistance against the fungal pathogen Fusarium graminearum. We would like to identify and characterize this gene.


Therefore, you will contribute to




  • -  generating genome locus specific markers (PCRs, mostly)




  • -  screening and sequencing BAC clones harboring this piece of


    genomic sequence

    - using virus-induced gene silencing to temporarily silence


    candidate genes to test whether they have an effect on the resistance of Fusarium-challenged wheat heads


    The practical work will be carried out in our laboratories/glass houses in Tulln (20 min from Vienna). Basic molecular biology skills (DNA/RNA-prep, molecular cloning, PCR) are advantageous but not mandatory. Start immediately or at your earliest convenience.
