DEVELOPMENT OF A POINT-OF-CARE DIAGNOSTIC DEVICE FOR THE DETECTION AND QUANTIFICATION OF ORAL AND RESPIRATORY TRACT DISEASES FOR THE USE IN GENERAL PRACTITIONER OFFICES, DENTAL CLINICS, PRACTICES AND HOSPITAL EMERGENCY ROOMS.

The Business Unit Molecular Diagnostics at the AIT develops tailored biomarkers, biosensors and rapid point of care test applications for life threatening diseases. The group of Johannes Peham who is responsible for System Integration and Point-of-Care Devices is currently part of the European Union´s Horizon 2020 project “DIAGORAS”. DIAGORAS stands for chair/bedside diagnosis of oral and respiratory tract infections and identification of antibiotic resistance for personalized monitoring and treatment. The AIT´s responsibilities lie with the assay development, including qPCR, RT-qPCR and a microarray for antibiotic resistance testing. The internship allows to gain insights into every day duties within European projects, to get proficient with assay design strategies and to learn about the quantification and detection of both viral and bacterial targets.

Responsibilities:
• Primer design for bacteria and viruses responsible for oral and respiratory tract infections
• qPCR Primer Validation
• RT-qPCR Primer Validation
• Data analysis

Qualifications:
• At least a successfully completed 2nd semester of a Science oriented study (Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Virology, et cetera)
• First hand experiences with molecular based techniques such as PCR, qPCR and RT-qPCR
• Quality driven and critically thinking personality
